چکیده

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is one of the fastest growing Internet applications. It is a viable alternative to the traditional telephony systems due to its high resource utilization and cost efficiency. Meanwhile, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) have become a ubiquitous networking technology that has been deployed around the world. Driven by these two popular technologies, Voice over WLAN (VoWLAN) has been emerging as an infrastructure to provide low-cost wireless voice services. However, VoWLAN poses significant challenges since the performance characteristics of wireless networks are much worse than that of their wireline counterparts, and the IEEE 802.11-based WLAN was not originally designed to support delay-sensitive voice traffic. In this paper, we provide a survey of recent advances in VoWLAN voice capacity analysis, call admission schemes, and medium access control (MAC) layer quality of service (QoS) enhancement mechanisms. Some open research issues are presented for further investigation. Copyright # 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Supporting VoIP Services in IEEE 802.11e WLANs

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is becoming popular thanks to its cost efficiency. However, it has been a challenge to provide good quality of VoIP services in WLANs, which is due mainly to (i) the nature of contention-based channel access of WLAN Medium Access Control (MAC); (ii) the presence of coexisting non-real-time data traffic; and (iii) the ti...

Supporting VoIP Traffic in IEEE 802.11 WLAN with Enhanced Medium Access Control (MAC) for Quality of Service

With fast deployment of wireless local area networks (WLANs), the ability of WLAN to support real time services with stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements has come into fore. In this paper, we evaluate the capability of the enhanced point coordination function (EPCF) and enhanced distributed coordination function (EDCF), which are part of the medium access control (MAC) enhancements f...

A Survey on Voice over IP over Wireless LANs

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a form of voice communication that uses audio data to transmit voice signals to the end user. VoIP is one of the most important technologies in the World of communication. Around, 20 years of research on VoIP, some problems of VoIP are still remaining. During the past decade and with growing of wireless technologies, we have seen that many papers turn thei...

Quality of Service (QoS) in Wireless Network, VOIP Simulation Environment

A Quality of Service (QoS) is determines if a wireless technology can successfully deliver high value services such as voice and video. The PHY and MAC layers of 802.16 are described in detail with regarding their QoS. The relations and interactions of these QoS mechanisms are described to give an understanding them. The UGS service flow can handles the traffic generated by VOIP calls in the mo...

iVoIP: an intelligent bandwidth management scheme for VoIP in WLANs

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has been widely used by many mobile consumer devices in IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLAN) due to its low cost and convenience. However, delays of all VoIP flows dramatically increase when network capacity is approached. Additionally, unfair traffic distribution between downlink and uplink flows in WLANs impacts the perceived VoIP quality. This p...
